Renewable energy is energy generated from natural resources like wind, rain, tides, the sun and geothermal heat. In 2006, about 18% of global final energy consumption came from renewables, with 13% coming from traditional biomass, such as wood-burning. Hydroelectricity was the next largest renewable source, providing 3%, followed by solar hot water/heating, which contributed 1.3%.

Hydro power is a mature and well-understood technology that offers advantages over other renewable energy:

  • high efficiency plant and high power density
  • long system lifetime (up to 50 years)
  • predictable energy outputs
  • excellent load factor characteristics
