MICRO-GENERATION TECHNOLOGIES

Solar Power - Why go Solar?

domestic solar power set-up

Despite first impressions, the UK in fact has a reasonable solar energy resource, with about 850 kWh of annual output energy for every metre square in the south of England and there is a huge potential to develop solar on most rooftops.

Solar energy is available for water heating and electricity generation and the technologies to achieve this are mature and costs are now coming down.

RDC Solar Service

RDC can evaluate the technical details for a solar thermal (for hot water) or solar photovoltaics (for electricity) and manage the installation and commissioning of schemes.

RDC can also process the relevant grants that can cover up to 100% of total costs.

woodfuel burner

Woodfuel heating - What are the advantages?

Wood as form of heating is seeing a resurgence in the UK and is a sustainable heating solution in many buildings with good potential payback, especially for properties that traditionally rely on oil for heating.

RDC Woodfuel Service

RDC can assist clients undertake the studies required to consider woodfuel heating and arrange the installation of plant and commissioning of schemes.  There are substantial government grants for installation of woodfuel heating projects which RDC can prepare and process for clients.

micro wind power

Wind Power - Is it for you?

In terms of cost effectiveness of renewable energy options, wind power is one of the best for micro-generation.  However, the following are required of a potential site:

  • Average windspeeds of over 5 m/s
  • Clear 100 m aspect to the prevailing wind direction
  • Either mounted on a tower or mast 20 m from buildings but can be considered mounted on the building
  • Located at least 50 m from neighbours

RDC Wind Power Service

RDC can help clients decide on the most appropriate wind turbine technology for the site from the large array of products on offer and give guidance about the potential grants for schemes.

Within the UK electricity sector renewables accounted for 4.5% of supply in 2006. The majority of our electricity comes from coal, gas and nuclear power stations. But renewable energy supply is growing at 5% a year and is over 4 times the level it was in 1990.

The bulk of renewable electricity in the UK is from Biofuels and Waste (82%) with Wind and Hydro (large-scale) at 8% each. Small-scale hydro (projects below 1 MW) supplies 1%, the same as Geothermal & Solar Heating, with others (Solar PV, Wave & Tidal) still at a negligible amount.

Natural gas, oil and electricity are the main form of heating buildings in the UK, but there is a massive opportunity for woodfuel and ground source heat pumps to make a contribution as a low carbon heating solution in many buildings, especially those in rural areas that are off the mains gas network.

Feasibility Study...

Hydro power is a mature and well-understood technology that offers advantages over other renewable energy:

  • high efficiency plant and high power density
  • long system lifetime (up to 50 years)
  • predictable energy outputs
  • excellent load factor characteristics
